OVERVIEW: We currently have an opportunity available for an Professional Relief Parent with our Division of Child Development and Youth Services, under our Foster Care Emergency Shelter.

The Professional Relief Parent assists in the maintenance of an environment which is conducive to positive change, growth, skill development and nurturing of Ada S. McKinley foster children. This position provides respite services in the full-time House Parents’ absence and functions as a support system for the parents in efforts to create consistency in the family setting.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Carries on the normal structure and routine in the absence of the House Parent.
  • Assists the Ada S. McKinley house parent by providing child care and services to the children including transportation of children to recreational activities, homework assistance and therapy, and additional supervision of the children.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of children while providing needed care.
  • Provides responsible “parental” supervision, monitoring, care and direction for the children consistent with the parent’s methodology in the parent’s absence.
  • Prepares meals, does laundry and attends to the appropriate maintenance of the home and general orderliness.
  • Maintains cleanliness of children’s play area, including but not limited to sanitizing and changing crib linens. 
  • Performs other task as assigned, including the supervision of biological family visits.


Job Requirements

Education: This position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or General Education Diploma.


  • The incumbent must be 21 years of age and have previous child care experience within an educational of social service setting.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and proof of automobile insurance coverage.
  • Must be able to pass all required criminal background checks and reference checks and to maintain an acceptable background per DCFS/Ada S. McKinley regulations and policies.

 Additional Professional Requirements:

  • Must possess good verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must go through training to become a Mandated Reporter. 
  • Must complete a medical examination on file as required by DCFS/Ada S. McKinley and keep an updated one on file each year of employment.
  • Must demonstrate the beliefs, attitude and awareness that support cultural sensitivity to the client population served.
  • Ability to partner with clients individually, in family, to help them mobilize resources and their inner capacity to address problems they face.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with other team members, other agency resources and outside services addressing client needs.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and able to multi-task effectively.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule as the needs of the department dictate.
  • Must be able to exercise discretion and independent judgment
