Job Description

Basic Function: The Respite Worker’s primary duty is to provide on-call relief to in the House Parent’s absence. Respite Workers are responsible for providing parental supervision, monitoring, care, and direction for the children consistent with the Foster Parent's methodology. Works collaboratively with House Parents, staff and other members of the Child Family Team.

  • Provides parental relief for house parents’ time away from shelter due to absence, time off, etc.
  • Assists house parents by providing child care services including transportation to recreational activities, homework assistance, and all other related services.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of children while providing child care services.
  • Establishes a positive, constructive relationship with children through communication, interaction and role modeling.
  • Acts as a caring parental authority in efforts to aid in the youth’s personal growth.
  • Occasionally provides housekeeping support to the residence including but not limited to preparing meals, laundry tasks, and appropriate maintenance of the home.
  • Carries on the normal structure and routine in the absence of the House Parent.
  • Maintains cleanliness of youth activity area/milieu, including but not limited to sanitizing and changing crib linens.
  • Maintains organization and sanitation of clothing and toy donations.
  • Assists with the preparation of vacant apartments, including, but not limited to laundry, mopping/sweeping, and cleaning of appliances, dishes & organizing cloths.
  • Provides telephone coverage for breaks.
  • Completes various reports and maintains records as required.
  • Documents shift activities as required.
  • Participates in ongoing training and maintain certificates such as First Aid/ CPR, CPI, Non-Violent Intervention and medication administration, etc.
  • Performs other task as assigned, including the supervision of biological family visits.

 

 

Job Requirements

Specifications:

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Previous child care experience preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and proof of automobile insurance coverage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Compliance with Illinois Mandated Reporter Laws.

 

Mental/Physical Demands: ­­­­­­­­­ In some cases special skills or knowledge is desirable to meet the needs of behaviorally aggressive youth. Ability to use common sense, patience and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and talk or hear, sit, stand and walk. The employee will occasionally lift up to 15-20 pounds.

 

Environmental Conditions: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Duties are performed in a typical office environment.  No unusual or adverse working conditions exist. Employee is expected to follow all safety rules and regulations.
