We currently have an opportunity available for an Educational Specialist with our Educational Services Department. This position will provide direction, case-finding, informational, financial aid recording educational placement and follow-up services to participants and prospective participants, under the supervision of the Director.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Visits target High School to identify, recruit and otherwise serve program participants.
  • Establishes effective partnership with counselors, teachers and other school personnel in the interest of providing better educational services to young people.
  • Meets regularly with participants to ensure that they register and maintain a rigorous academic course of study and familiarize them with educational opportunities and available financial resources for educational objectives.
  • Maintains a flexible schedule to accommodate evening, weekend and occasional holiday appointments and meeting obligations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communications with colleges, universities, vocational and technical schools and other institutions offering educational opportunities to students.
  • Maintains liaison with students, parents, schools, funding agencies, testing centers and other individuals and organizations to resolve problem students may encounter prior to or after placement.
  • Prepares reports, completes, maintains and updates all program participants’ records at the direction of the supervisor.
  • Develops, implements and updates the Individual Academic Plan (IAP).
  • Plans, recruits and accompanies students as staff chaperone on tours of college campuses.
  • Recruits and selects eligible participants for college placement, financial aid assistance and additional educational services provided by the program
  • Accurately assesses students’ academic and financial needs, career interests and potential college majors to develop profiles that are used to recommend and counsel students on various postsecondary educational opportunities.
  • Facilitates workshops pertaining to financial aid assistance, college placement and various topics relating to successfully completing high school and pursuing a post secondary education.
  • Performs other work related duties as directed.

Mental/Physical Demands:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients, and other employees of the organization.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to sit.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; Work is performed in either an office or classroom environment.


Job Requirements

  • This position prefers a master’s degree, but bachelor’s accepted and two year of experience that demonstrates ability to relate positively to a client population being served.
  • Demonstrates the experiences, beliefs, attitude and awareness that indicate cultural sensitivity to the client population served.
  • Ability to partner with participants individually, in family, to help them mobilize resources and their inner capacity to address problems they face.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with other team members, other Agency resources and outside services in addressing client needs.
