Tutor - Academic Youth Program

OVERVIEW:We currently have an opportunity available for a Tutor with our Educational Services Department. Under the supervision of the Educational Services Program Director, this position delivers academic tutoring to students of Chicago Public Schools in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. This is a part-time position that works a maximum of 15 hours per week.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Attending training, planning and preparation sessions under direct supervision of Reading Specialist.
  • Organizing tutorial materials/supplies before each tutorial session.
  • Conducting practice/training presentations to other tutors and Curriculum/Reading Specialist.
  • Maintaining accurate student information, i.e. attendance, test scores, progress reports, phone numbers and addresses.
  • Documenting student problems/concerns and communicate them to the Program Director and/or Program Coordinator immediately.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications

Education: This position requires either the successful completion of at least two years of undergraduate education and or must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or hold a college degree.

Experience/Professional Requirements: Some previous work experience or coursework with tutoring and mentoring elementary school-aged students.

Other Skills/ Abilities:

  • Can follow a lesson plan and learn to use instructional materials.
  • Has good written and communication skills.
  • Must be responsible and committed to helping inner-city youth.
  • Must be enthusiastic about children’s special interest and skills.
  • Must be a team player and has good organizational skills.
  • Must be reliable, dependable and prompt and have a friendly demeanor.
  • Must be patient, flexible and is good working with elementary school – aged children.
  • The position requires candidates be able to work full-time July and August during the summer.
